Joshua Tree Yoga
Sat Nam, Bhakti
There are yoga studios in Joshua Tree, but the focus is on the retreats. As Joshua Tree is remote and fairly desolate, there aren’t a lot of distractions. And there is a large retreat center with an outdoor amphitheater to host the retreats.
The Festivals
Bhakti and Shakti Fests
Joshua Tree is the home of BhaktiFest [LINK] and now ShaktiFest [LINK]. Each is a yoga, kirtan and personal growth festival. Shaktifest is held in May, bringing the energy of the spring, and Bhaktifest is in the fall. While similar in format, Shaktifest places more emphasis on the divine feminine. Given the new branding as BhaktiFest West, expect an East Coast version soon.
Sat Nam Fest West [LINK]
What could be more new age than a Kundalini Yoga retreat. Sat Nam Fest West is one of three current Sat Nam Fests worldwide. The other two are held in the Berkshires in Massachusetts and in Mexico in Puerto Morelos.
Both of the festivals are held at the Joshua Tree Retreat Center, a large venue just off the Twentynine Palms Highway.
The Nutritional Gangster [LINK] Based out of Seattle, Chloe Dee offers a nutrition and yoga retreat at a private residential retreat near Joshua Tree. Check her site for details.
The Studio
(yes, singular)
Instant Karma Yoga Studio [LINK] Located in the Starlite building, close to Pie for the People and Joshua Tree Coffee Roasters. Instant Karma is the only studio in town (that we found) that offers regular classes. Currently, there are offerings seven days a week with a variety of styles. (note: In order to access the menu on the site, you must hold your cursor at the bar. The menu will brighten slightly shortly thereafter.)
The Practitioners
A good place to start, beyond the share boards, is the Instant Karma class page. They list the teachers in a variety of styles.
Yoga Santosha [LINK]
This is the practice of Paul Penners, a transplant for The Netherlands. Paul teaches classes at Instant Karma as well as in Borrego Springs, a small town closer to Idyllwild and Palm Springs than to Joshua Tree.
